Tropical Cyclone Jude batters Mozambique with heavy rains and strong winds

Damage caused by Tropical Cyclone Jude

Tropical Cyclone Jude made landfall over the coast of Mozambique at around 06:00 local time (LT) on Monday, March 10, 2025. The system brought intense floods and strong winds, leading to widespread flooding and damage.

Tropical Cyclone Jude made landfall over the Mossuril district of Mozambique’s Nampula Province at around 06:00 local time (LT) on Monday, March 10, 2025. It was the third cyclone to hit the region in 3 months.

The system had maximum sustained winds near the center reaching 120 km/h (75 mph), and gusts reaching 195 km/h (120 mph). Strong winds from the cyclone, along with heavy precipitation caused widespread damage across the region.

Jude downed electricity pylons, leaving about 40 000 households without power on Monday, while the national carrier Mozambique Airlines canceled all domestic flights to northern cities – assuring passengers that they would be accommodated once conditions improve.

Heavy rainfall of up to 200 mm (7.9 inches) in 24 hours following the landfall was forecast for coastal districts such as Memba, Monapo, Mossuril, Mozambique Island, and Nacala.

Severe flooding has been reported across the affected region, with multiple homes destroyed or damaged, along with damage to other buildings and roads in the region.

The provincial directorate of education has ordered the closure of all schools in the province throughout Monday.

No fatalities or injuries have been reported, and the full extent of its damage is still being assessed.
