Large tornado hits West Java Province, damaging more than 50 homes and injuring 22, Indonesia

A large and destructive tornado swept through four districts in Sumedang and Bandung Regencies of West Java, Indonesia on February 21, 2024, damaging hundreds of homes and injuring at least 30 people.

According to local media reports, the tornado hit at around 16:00 LT, affecting sub-districts of Cicalengka and Rancaekek in Bandung Regency and Jatinangor and Cimanggung in Sumedang Regency. At least 30 people were injured, mostly by house materials and trees.

On Wednesday night, the head of BPBD Kabupaten Bandung, Uka Suska Puji Utama, said there were around 50 affected houses, adding that their teams are still on the ground gathering data. According to preliminary data, 10 houses in the Cimanggung District were affected.

On Thursday, West Java disaster mitigation agency spokesman Hadi Rahmad said the disaster impacted over 800 families, damaged 13 factories and 10 houses in Sumedang, and 18 factories and 233 homes in Bandung.
