Massive avalanche hits Jammu and Kashmir’s Sonamarg

A massive avalanche struck the Jammu and Kashmir’s Sonamarg area on the Srinagar-Leh Highway on Thursday, February 8, 2024. Despite its size, no loss of life has been reported so far.
The avalanche took place close to a workshop for the construction of the Zojila tunnel in Sonamarg.
The affected region experienced very heavy snowfall since the beginning of February and was under an avalanche warning when the incident happened.
Local authorities are urging residents to avoid visiting avalanche-prone zones.

Several feet of snow are still present across the Kashmir Valley, disrupting both air and land traffic.
