Large rockslide hits stone quarry in Mizoram, India

A large rockslide occurred at a stone quarry in the village of Maudarh, Mizoram’s Hnahthial district, India on November 14, 2022. The event resulted in the deaths of 12 workers and the destruction of 5 excavators, 1 stone crusher, and 1 drilling machine.

The landslide appears to originate in residual soil high up on the slope above the quarry, according to Dr. Dave Petley of The Landslide Blog.1

“A provisional interpretation might be that the quarry operations had not removed enough of the weathered material high up on the slope, which then failed due to the loss of toe support.  The debris then triggered some failure of the rock being quarried in the lower part of the slope.”

It is interesting that the weather was sunny and dry at the time of the failure, Petley said.
