Heavy rains and landslides in the Achham district, Nepal’s Sudurpashchim Province killed at least 17 people and left 5 more missing on September 16, 2022.

Friday morning’s persistent downpour caused landslides that swept away homes in three different regions of the district, local officials said.

Min Raj Acharya, a district administrator, told Xinhua, “The rescue teams have found the bodies of 17 people and evacuated eleven injured individuals.”1

“The search for five missing individuals is ongoing,” he continued, stressing that the army and police have been engaged in the rescue efforts.

The injured were airlifted to the Surkhet area for medical care.

Officials said the number of casualties could increase, adding that communication services have been affected as well as Bhimdutta Highway connecting seven districts in the province.
