A newly-discovered asteroid designated 2022 CG7 flew past Earth at a distance of 0.13 LD / 0.00034 AU (50 860 km / 31 600 miles) at 15:29 UTC on February 12, 2022. This is the 24th known asteroid to fly past Earth within 1 lunar distance since the start of the year. The 25th — 2022 CO6 — will fly past us at 08:53 UTC on February 15.

2022 CG7 was first observed at Catalina Sky Survey, Arizona on February 13, one day after it made its close approach to Earth.

The object has an estimated diameter between 5.1 and 11 m (16.7 – 36 feet) and it belongs to the Apollo group of asteroids.

  1. Does anyone else find it disconcerting or unsettling to repeatedly find out that fairly significant NEO’s are discovered the day after flyby.
    I knew about 2022C06 but the post flyby of 2022CG7 was only 31K miles out. (albeit not a huge rock, and not much threat, but up to 30 ft diameter isn’t insignificant either).
    I suppose some of these rocks sneak into our orbit when observation platforms are looking away.
