Heavy snow hits Hokkaido after below-average December, Japan
Residents of Sapporo city in Hokkaido prefecture, Japan, woke up to the largest amount of snowfall this winter on Tuesday, January 21, 2020, at 39 cm (15 inches) by 02:00 UTC (11:00 LT). The snow came as parts of the nation, including the island, were experiencing a lack of snowfall in December.
Cold air above northern Japan is dumping heavy snow to the area following a month of no snow.
"In Hokkaido to the north, where resorts like Niseko are known for reliable, fresh powder, the snow failed to fall in December and remains scant in the new year," Japan Times wrote.
In Sapporo, the snow had to be trucked in for the yearly festival as December 2019's snowfall in the city was the lowest since the meteorological agency started recording in 1961.
