Summer snow, heavy rain after record-breaking heatwave hits Tasmania
Just several days after record-breaking spring heatwave, Tasmania received much-needed rain and up to 40 cm (15.7 inches) of summer snow in the central highlands. The system responsible for this rain and snow is the same one that caused record-breaking rain across Victoria over the weekend.
A lot of places in the Tasmania's eastern parts received around 50 mm (1.9 inches) of rain or more over the 24 hours ending 09:00 AEDT, December 3, 2017, according to Bureau of Meteorology. The highest rainfall was recorded in Pyengana in the state's northeast – 102 mm (4.01 inches). The bulk of it fell overnight.
Capital Hobart received 37 mm (1.45 inches) in the 24 hours to 09:00 AEST, which is some 80% of its monthly average rainfall (50 mm / 1.96 inches). Some 3 000 homes were left without power Sunday morning, mostly in the Hobart area.
