Moderate G2 geomagnetic storm in progress (June 1, 2013)

G2 (Moderate) geomagnetic storming has been observed as Earth remains under the influence of a slow-moving Coronal Mass Ejection (CME). This event was not associated with a significant M1.0 solar flare from May 31, 2013 and is likely the result of a disappearing filament. Continued low-level geomagnetic storming is expected for the next 24-48 hours from coronal hole high speed stream effects that are expected in the near term. Sharp drop in electrons is recorded.
A moderate (Kp=6) geomagnetic storm is now in progress. At G2 storming levels high-latitude power systems may experience voltage alarms and long-duration storms may cause transformer damage. Spacecraft operations may required corrective actions to orientation by ground control and some changes are possible in drag affect orbit predictions. HF radio propagation can fade at higher latitudes, and aurora has been seen as low as New York and Idaho.
