• Record tsunami waves cause nearly USD 1 million in damages at Crescent City Harbor, California

    The M8.8 earthquake off Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula sent tsunami waves of up to 1.2 m (4 feet) to Crescent City Harbor, California, on July 30, 2025, coinciding with high tide. The tsunami waves caused damages worth nearly USD 1 million. The city also set a new record for the highest tsunami waves on record for the continental United States.

  • Madre Fire explodes to over 14 000 ha (35 500 acres) in one day, becoming California’s largest wildfire of 2025

    The Madre Fire in California’s San Luis Obispo County ignited around 13:00 LT on July 2, 2025, and burned through 14 370 ha (35 531 acres) by early July 3.  Evacuation orders and warnings have been issued for multiple zones as strong winds and high temperatures continue to fuel rapid fire growth. This is the largest wildfire in California in 2025 to date.

  • Extreme heat forecast for weekend triggers Extreme Heat Watch in Southwest U.S.

    The National Weather Service issued an Extreme Heat Watch for parts of southern Arizona and far southeastern California from the morning of June 14 through the evening of June 16, 2025. Affected areas include the lower deserts of Arizona and southeastern California, where daily maximum temperatures are expected to reach 40°C to 46°C (104°F to 115°F).
