Up to 80 homes damaged by tornado in Flores da Cunha, Brazil
A tornado struck the rural community of Alfredo Chaves in Flores da Cunha on Monday, December 8, 2025, causing significant structural damage to dozens of residences and leaving hundreds without power.

The State Civil Defense Monitoring Center confirmed that the damage reported in Flores da Cunha in the Serra Gaúcha region of southern Brazil on Monday was caused by a tornado embedded within the intense storm that hit the area.
The classification followed an assessment carried out by the Department of Disaster Management, whose teams conducted field surveys and aerial image analyses in the Alfredo Chaves community, the area most affected by the tornado.
According to the Civil Defense report, the damage pattern showed debris projected in multiple directions, consistent with the rotational winds of a tornado. Radar and satellite analyses from 17:30 local time (LT) indicated a convective cell with high reflectivity directly over the municipality, and wind speeds likely exceeding 100 km/h (62 mph).
An Orange Alert had been issued by the Operations Center at 17:10 LT, warning of storms, wind, and hail risk for the region.
The storm damaged between 40 and 80 homes, depending on initial counts from local assessments, and left approximately 2 000 people affected, with temporary power outages impacting about 1 000 customers.
Roofs were torn off, and falling debris damaged vehicles, storage buildings, and commercial structures. Agricultural areas, particularly vineyards (parreirais), reported partial losses. Public buildings, including a basic health unit (UBS) and a school, also sustained roof and facade damage.
Municipal emergency teams, supported by Defesa Civil-RS and volunteer firefighters, carried out debris removal, distributed tarpaulins, and inspected structural safety. No fatalities were reported as of the latest update, and no serious injuries were officially confirmed.
