A shallow earthquake registered by the USGS as M5.1 hit northeastern Afghanistan at 21:57 UTC (23:57 local time) on September 4, 2022, killing at least 8 people and injuring another 9. EMSC is reporting M5.3 at a depth of 10 km (6.2 miles).
The epicenter was located 34.8 km (21.6 miles) NE of Jalalabad (population 200 331), 45 km (28 miles) E of Mehtar Lam (population 17 345), and 47 km (29.2 miles) WSW of Asadabad.
The quake caused both financial and human losses in Kunar Province, local authorities said.
