Shallow M6.3 earthquake hits Komandorskiye Ostrova, Russia

A strong and shallow earthquake registered by the USGS as M6.3 hit Komandorskiye Ostrova, Russia at 09:05 UTC on June 25, 2019. The agency is reporting a depth of 10 km (6.2 miles). EMSC is reporting the same magnitude and depth.

The epicenter was located 106 km (66 miles) E of Ust'-Kamchatsk Staryy (population 4 939) and 207 km (129 miles) E of Klyuchi (population 10 000), Kamchatka, Russia.

There are about 300 people living within 100 km (62 miles).

 Based on all available data, a destructive Pacific-wide tsunami is not expected, PTWC said.

8 000 people are estimated to have felt light shaking and 2 000 weak.

The USGS issued a green alert for shaking-related fatalities and economic losses. There is a low likelihood of casualties and damage.

Overall, the population in this region resides in structures that are resistant to earthquake shaking, though vulnerable structures exist. The predominant vulnerable building types are adobe block and unreinforced brick with mud construction.
