• First major wildfire of the year forces 1 500 people to evacuate, Spain

    A major wildfire in eastern Spain consumed over 4 000 ha (9 884 acres) of land near the village of Villanueva de Viver and prompted the evacuation of 1 500 people. Over 500 firefighters and 20 planes and helicopters were working to control the fire. This is Spain’s first major wildfire of the year.

    The second heatwave to hit Europe since mid-June 2022 has claimed more than 1 000 lives over the past 8 days, with most of them in Portugal. Numerous high temperature records have been broken and more are expected to fall over the next few days. This is the second heatwave to hit Europe since mid-June.

    A swarm of very low-magnitude hybrid seismic events was registered under Teide volcano, Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain on July 12, 2022. The most likely origin of this type of swarm is the movement of fluids such as steam, gas or water, inside the hydrothermal system of the volcano.
