Remnants of Typhoon “Merbok” slammed into western Alaska, U.S. on September 16 and 17, 2022, bringing significant storm surge and high winds to the region. This was the worst September storm to hit Alaska since the 1970s.
Typhoon “Nanmadol” made landfall in Kyushu, Japan on September 18, 2022, with maximum sustained winds of 175 km/h (110 mph) and a central pressure of 935 hPa – making it the 4th strongest typhoon on record to make landfall in Japan. Historical records there date back to 1951.
Fiona strengthened into a Category 4 hurricane at 06:00 UTC on Wednesday, September 21, 2022, while moving away from the Turks and Caicos islands. The center of Fiona will continue to move away from the islands today, and approach Bermuda late on Thursday. The system is expected to affect portions of Atlantic Canada as a powerful hurricane-force cyclone late Friday and Saturday.
Category 1 Hurricane “Fiona” made landfall along the extreme southwestern coast of Puerto Rico near Punta Tocon at 19:20 UTC on September 18, 2022, with maximum sustained winds of 140 km/h (85 mph) and minimum central pressure of 986 hPa. This is the first hurricane to make landfall in Puerto Rico since Hurricane “Maria” in 2017.
Heavy rains produced by Tropical Storm “Fiona” continue over portions of the Leeward Islands and are spreading across the Virgin Islands. The storm is moving toward Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic and is expected to strengthen into a hurricane before reaching them.
The remnants of Typhoon “Merbok” are working through the Bering Sea, bringing the potential for historic coastal flooding and storm surges as the system works through the region this weekend.
Nanmadol formed on September 13, 2022, as the 14th named storm of the 2022 Pacific typhoon season, strengthened to a typhoon on September 15, and reached super typhoon status on September 16. The system is still strengthening and is expected to reach Kyushu, Japan by September 18.
Tropical Storm “Fiona” formed at 01:50 UTC on September 15, 2022, as the 6th named storm of the 2022 Atlantic hurricane season. The center of Fiona is expected to move across the Leeward Islands Friday night and early Saturday, and move near the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico late Saturday into Sunday.
Typhoon “Muifa” made its first landfall in China on the coast of Zhoushan, Zhejiang Province at approximately 12:30 UTC on September 14, 2022, with maximum sustained winds of up to 151 km/h (94 mph), and the second in Shanghai’s Fengxian District at 16:30 UTC, with maximum sustained winds of up to 126 km/h (78 mph).
China’s national observatory issued a red alert, the most severe warning level, on Wednesday, September 14, 2022, as Typhoon Muifa is expected to make landfall twice later in the day-the first in coastal areas between Sanmen County and Zhoushan City in Zhejiang Province around nightfall, and the second in coastal areas between Jiaxing City in Zhejiang Province and Shanghai’s Pudong District on Wednesday evening, with maximum 1-minute sustained winds of 130 km/h (80 mph).
