• Increased seismicity, ice-rock avalanche at Iliamna, Alaska

    An increase in seismicity has been observed at Iliamna volcano beginning at 20:00 UTC on June 5, 2023. As a result, the Alaska Volcano Observatory (AVO) raised the Aviation Color Code and Volcano Alert level for Iliamna to Yellow and Advisory.

  • Increased degassing activity at Taal volcano, vog reported in Balete, Laurel, and Agoncillo, Philippines

    In an event unfolding from the evening of June 3 to the early hours of June 4, 2023, Taal Volcano showcased an increased degassing activity, leading to the formation of steam-rich plumes reaching up to 3 000 m (9842 feet) above the Taal Volcano Island. This activity has resulted in significant volcanic smog or vog over the Taal Caldera, affecting local municipalities.

  • Borealis Mud Volcano – Unique new volcano discovered in the Barents Sea

    Scientists from UiT, The Arctic University of Norway, in collaboration with REV Ocean, discovered a unique new volcano in the Barents Sea. The Borealis Mud Volcano, located at a depth of 400 m (1 312 feet) and approximately 130 km (80 miles) south of Bear Island, continuously emits mud, fluids and gas, providing valuable insights into Earth science.
