Heavy rains measuring 132.20 mm (5.2 inches) hit parts of Greater Accra on Sunday, May 18. The storm caused four deaths, with three in Abokobi and one in Adenta, and forced more than 3 000 people to leave their homes.

Several areas in Accra, including Weija, Kaneshie, Adabraka, Adentan-Dodowa, Oyarifa, and parts of Tema, were hit by flooding. The rising water left vehicles stuck and blocked key roads, leading to major interruptions in traffic and daily life.

The Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMet) reported that the storm system had moved westward from Benin and Togo. It was expected to bring more clouds, thunderstorms, and rain to Ghana’s coastal, middle, transition, and northern areas.

On May 21, GMet issued a weather warning forecasting thunderstorms and moderate to heavy rainfall in parts of the country, particularly affecting the coastal, middle, and transition zones.

Mr. Adu Bonsu Gabriel, the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) Director for the Ahafo region, urged residents in flood-prone areas to move to safer locations, stressing the importance of taking early action to prevent disasters.
