A strong and shallow earthquake registered by the USGS as M6.6 hit South Sandwich Islands region at 23:55 UTC on August 27, 2019. The agency is reporting a depth of 24.5 km (15.2 miles). EMSC is reporting M6.6 at a depth of 10 km (6.2 miles).

The epicenter was located 2 484 km (1 543 miles) E of Tolhuin and 2 529 km (1 571 miles) E of Ushuaia, Tierra del Fuego, Argentina.

There are no people living within 100 km (62 miles).
