Strong M7.3 earthquake hits Banda Sea at intermediate depth, Indonesia
A strong earthquake registered by the USGS as M7.3 hit Banda Sea, Indonesia at 02:53 UTC (11:53 local time) on June 24, 2019. The agency is reporting a depth of 208 km (129 miles). EMSC is reporting M7.3 at a depth of 214 km (133 miles).
According to the USGS, the epicenter was located 319 km (128 miles) SSE of Ambon and 339 km (210 miles) S of Amahai, Indonesia.
There are about 500 people living within 100 km (62 miles).
Based on all available data, there is no tsunami threat because the earthquake is located too deep inside the earth, PTWC said.
The USGS issued a green alert for shaking-related fatalities and economic losses. There is a low likelihood of casualties and damage.
Overall, the population in this region resides in structures that are vulnerable to earthquake shaking, though resistant structures exist. The predominant vulnerable building types are unreinforced brick with concrete floor and precast concrete frame with wall construction.
Recent earthquakes in this area have caused secondary hazards such as tsunamis and landslides that might have contributed to losses.
24 000 people are estimated to have felt moderate shaking and 998 000 light.
