Coronal hole high speed stream sparks geomagnetic storm
Earth is under the influence of a positive polarity coronal hole high speed stream (CH HSS) on October 7 and 8, 2018. G1 – Minor geomagnetic storm conditions were observed at 16:22 UTC and 20:42 UTC on October 7, 2018. A G2 warning has been issued and is valid until 06:00 UTC and G1 until 09:00 UTC on October 8.
Solar wind parameters over the past 24 hours suggested the onset of influence from the positive polarity CH HSS, SWPC forecasters said. The total magnetic field strength was near or below 5 nT until after 09:45 UTC, October 7 when an increase to a peak of 18 nT was observed. Bz reached a maximum negative value of -14 nT at 14:18 UTC. Solar wind speeds increased to a maximum of 616 km/s. Phi transitioned from predominantly negative into the positive sector after 09:52 UTC.
The geomagnetic field is expected to reach G1-G2 (Minor-Moderate) storm levels through early to midday on October 8 followed by mostly unsettled to active levels through October 10 due to persistent CH HSS effects. The greater than 2 MeV electron flux is expected to reach moderate to high levels.
Solar activity was at very levels an the solar disk remains spotless.
