Tropical Storm "Haikui" (Salome) forms over Philippines, alerts issued

Tropical Storm "Haikui", known in the Philippines as Salome, formed 15:00 UTC, November 9, 2017, while traversing Batangas - Cavite area, Philippines, PAGASA reports. This storm is a heavy rain producer and residents are advised to be alert against possible flashfloods and landslides. After exiting PAR, Haikui is expected to strengthen into a typhoon while moving toward Hainan, China.

At 14:00 UTC, November 9, the center of soon to be named Tropical Storm "Haikui" was located in the vicinity of Mataas na Kahoy, Batangas. The system had maximum sustained winds of up to 65 km/h (40 mph) and gusts to 110 km/h (68 mph). It was moving WNW at 25 km/h (15 mph).

Tropical Cyclone Warning Signal #2 is in effect for Metro Manila, Bataan, Cavite, Laguna, Batangas and the northern section of Oriental and of Occidental Mindoro. TCWS #1 is in effect for Bulacan, Pampanga, Southern Zambales, Rizal, Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, Romblon, Marinduque, Quezon, rest of Oriental and Occidental Mindoro.

Estimated rainfall amount is from moderate to heavy within the 250 km (155 miles) diameter of the center of Haikui.

Residents under TCWS #2 and #1, as well as Central Luzon, are advised to be alert against possible flashfloods and landslides.

Sea travel is risky over areas under TCWS #2 and #1 due to rough to very rough seas.

Salome is expected to exit landmass tomorrow morning and exit the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) by Saturday morning (local time), and head toward Hainan, China, while strengthening.
