State of emergency in Samothraki after 273 mm (10.7 in) of rain within 3 hours

Authorities in Greece have declared a state of emergency on the island of Samothraki (Samothrace) after storms caused severe damage to roads, buildings and drinking water supply on Monday and Tuesday, September 25 and 26, 2017. There are no reports of deaths or injuries.

A government statement said Wednesday that military and civilian teams from other parts of the country have been sent in to help repair the flood damage, AP reported.

It said efforts are focusing on repairing the island's road network and water supply. Samothraki's health center and municipal buildings also suffered heavy damage from the storms late Monday and early Tuesday.

The heavy rain started on Monday, September 25 and continued into early hours of Tuesday, September 26.

According to Meteo Greece, their weather station in Samothraki reported 273.4 mm (10.7 inches) in 3 hours and 309 mm (12.1 inches) in just 8 hours.
