Heavy rains continued falling over Australia’s east coast on July 5, 2022, forcing more than 50 000 people to evacuate their homes, up from 30 000 on July 4. While some parts of the region saw a year’s worth of rain within just 3 days, this heavy rainfall event is still not over.
Heavy rains hit parts of eastern Australia over the weekend, forcing the Australian Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) to issue Severe Weather Warnings for Sydney metropolitan, Illawarra and Central Tablelands districts.
A cold spell is affecting southeast Australia this week, with widespread frosts at mid-elevations.
Unseasonably heavy rain is expected to impact parts of the Northern Territory and Queensland this week, with some areas possibly looking into several months’ worth of dry-season rainfall.
The Australian Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) has warned residents living in southeast Queensland of frosty mornings and single-digit temperatures throughout the month as well below June average temperatures descend over much of southeast Australia. Some parts of the state are experiencing their lowest June temperatures in more than 100 years.
Much of Queensland, Australia experienced unseasonably heavy rain and flooding this week, with parts of the state receiving between 3 to 4 months’ worth of rain in 48 to 72 hours.
