Estimated economic losses are less than 1% of GDP of Guatemala.
Overall, the population in this region resides in structures that are a mix of vulnerable and earthquake-resistant construction. The predominant vulnerable building types are mud walls and adobe blocks with concrete bond beam construction.
Recent earthquakes in this area have caused secondary hazards such as landslides that might have contributed to losses.

While there were no immediate reports of damage in Mexico, several homes sustained structural damage in Guatemala’s municipalities of San Marcos and Quetzaltenango.
Large cracks were reported in the walls of a hospital in San Marcos.
Several landslides were also reported in Guatemala, most notably in Zunil.
