22 dead, 8 others missing as heavy rains pound Maharashtra, India


Intense rain wreaked havoc in Maharashtra, India, resulting in 22 fatalities, 8 people missing, damaged structures, and washed-away properties particularly in districts Pune and Jalgaon, according to reports on September 27, 2019.

Skymet Weather said Pune has been experiencing heavy rain and thunderstorm since the past few days, starting around September 24.

The city has recorded 90 mm (3.5 inches) of rainfall in a span of just 21 hours until 05:30 LT on September 27.

Heavy downpours caused widespread floodings on roads, bridges, and highways. Torrential rains also uprooted trees and knocked down power poles. The Katraj Canal also collapsed, killing many animals in the vicinity. In addition, around 150 homes were destroyed.

14 of the fatalities were in Pune and one in Nashik. According to authorities, at least five residents were swept away by floodwaters in the Khed-Shivapur area. Three bodies were found from a well in the downstream region. Search and rescue operations are still ongoing for the other missing victims.

Six people died after a building compound wall collapsed in Arnyshwar Complex. Six others were killed after being caught in a thunderstorm in Jalgaon.

Over 16 000 residents have been evacuated from Baramati tehsil, Sinhgad, Dhanakwadi, Balajinagar, Ambegaon, Sahakar Nagar, Parvati Nagar, Kolhewadi and Kirkatwadi.

According to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, two teams from the National Disaster Response Force were displaced in Baramati and Pune. Another team is also heading to Baramati.

Meteorologists expect the rains to weaken in the following days, beginning September 28 over Maharashtra, as well as parts of Madhya Maharashtra, Konkan and Goa, and Marathwada.

Pune has seen 180% of its yearly seasonal total rainfall, which is a record since all the dams are swollen for the first time in 22 years.
