Stunning red sprite show over Western Australia
Professional photographer JJ Rao captured a breathtaking display of red sprites over Derby, Western Australia, during an intense thunderstorm in the Kimberley landscape on January 5, 2024.
Red Sprites are large-scale electrical discharges that occur high above thunderstorm clouds, presenting a reddish-orange glow that can stretch up to 90 km (55 miles) into the atmosphere. They are elusive and transient, often only lasting milliseconds, making them a challenging subject for photographers.
