A G5 – Extreme geomagnetic storm in May 2024 revealed just how far-reaching space weather can be. From subtle shifts in Earth’s upper atmosphere to radiation spikes on Mars, the event challenged infrastructure, disrupted systems, and gave scientists an enormous archive of data.
Four solar filament eruptions between May 6 and 7, 2025, produced fast-moving CMEs, all of which are expected to pass north or south of the Earth without impacting us. G1 – Minor storm conditions are likely on May 9 due to a combination of CH HSS and a possible glancing blow from a CME launched on May 5.
Solar activity increased on April 29, 2025, with three M-class solar flares recorded during the first half of the UTC day as large Active Region 4079 rotated into Earth’s view. Region 4079, formerly designated AR 4055, underwent significant growth while on the far side of the Sun and is expected to be the primary source of solar activity in the coming days.

Meanwhile, a solar radiation storm triggered by the X1.1 flare on March 28 reached the S2 – Moderate threshold at 02:05 UTC today.

A coronal mass ejection (CME) launched from the Sun on March 21, 2025, is expected to impact Earth early on March 23, prompting a G3 – Strong geomagnetic storm watch issued by NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC). The CME was associated with an M1.2 solar flare from Region 4028 at 15:34 UTC.
