• Tropical Cyclone “Ilsa” – Landfall expected as Category 4 cyclone, widespread impacts forecast across large parts of Western Australia

    Tropical Storm “Ilsa” formed on Tuesday, April 11, 2023, near the coast of Western Australia as the 7th named storm of the 2022/23 Australian region cyclone season. Landfall is expected east of Port Hedland late Thursday or early Friday (LT), as a Category 4 cyclone on the Australian cyclone scale.

  • Two destructive tornadoes hit New Zealand

    Some 50 homes have been damaged after severe thunderstorms spawned a destructive tornado in the Tasman District, near Nelson, South Island, New Zealand on April 10, 2023. The event happened about 16 hours after another damaging tornado swept through East Auckland, North Island on April 9.

  • Massive snowfall results in California’s largest snowpack on record

    17 atmospheric rivers and several non-atmospheric-river storms since December 2022 pushed California’s snowpack to its largest level in recorded history, surpassing the previous record set in 1982-1983. In addition, the state’s drought conditions have improved significantly since the start of the water year, with severe to exceptional drought conditions now covering only 6.99% of the area, down from 93% just one year ago.
