A strong earthquake registered by the USGS as M6.4 struck near Baculin, Davao, Mindanao, Philippines, at 03:02 UTC (11:02 LT) on January 7, 2026. The agency is reporting a depth of 35 km (21.7 miles). EMSC is reporting the same magnitude and depth. There is no tsunami threat from this event.

The epicenter was located 17 km (10 miles) ESE of Baculin (population 2 970), 27 km (17 miles) ESE of Baganga (population 10 105), 28 km (17 miles) NE of Manay (population 20 330), 74 km (46 miles) NE of Mati (population 105 900), and 127 km (79 miles) ENE of Davao (population 1 776 950), Philippines.
There is no tsunami threat from this earthquake.
The USGS issued a Green alert for shaking-related fatalities and economic losses. There is a low likelihood of casualties and damage.
Overall, the population in this region resides in structures that are a mix of vulnerable and earthquake-resistant construction.
The predominant vulnerable building types are unknown or miscellaneous and heavy wood frame construction. Recent earthquakes in this area have caused secondary hazards, such as landslides, that might have contributed to losses.
