At least 11 fatalities have been reported as the Gambhira Bridge collapsed near Padra Town in Gujrat on July 9. According to Superintendent of Police Rohan Anand, the concrete slab connecting two piers gave way around 07:30 local time (LT).
Two siblings were among those killed, said Anand, adding that nine others were rescued, some with injuries. Visuals from the site showed a complete section of the slab missing, with vehicles plunging into the waters beneath.
The nearly 900 m (3 000 feet) long bridge was constructed in 1985. Located in Mujpur in Padra taluka of the Vadodara district, the bridge connected Mujpur to Gambhira in Anand district as well as Central Gujarat to Saurashtra.
The cause of the collapse remains unclear. However, the most likely explanation is systemic negligence — the bridge had been classified as structurally unsound by independent assessments years ago, yet it continued to operate under normal traffic conditions, including during peak hours.
