Tornado hits Salvador Escalante in Mexico, damages 14 homes and a school

A damaging tornado hit Opopeo and Casas Blancas, within the municipality of Salvador Escalante in Michoacán on Saturday, June 7, around 16:00 local time. The twister, termed as a water snake locally, caused damage to at least 14 homes, uprooted several trees, and brought down the roof of a local school.

The weather event came after heavy rainfall in the area, and no injuries were reported. While ‘water snake’ tornadoes like this are usually less intense, they can be an early sign of a larger tornado, especially if they stay in contact with the ground for too long.

Michoacán Civil Protection advised people to keep their distance during such events, take shelter in a safe place, avoid fragile windows or structures, and stay informed through official channels.
