Large tornado touches down near Kansas City, Missouri

A large and extremely dangerous tornado touched down near Kansas City on Tuesday, June 3, 2025, causing widespread damage and overturning multiple vehicles along the I-435 and I-70.

A large tornado touched down near Kansas City, Missouri, on June 3, as storms moved through the region. The National Weather Service (NWS) office in Kansas City issued multiple Tornado Warnings throughout the afternoon.

Residents across the Kansas City metropolitan area heard sirens as the storm moved in from Johnson County.

The NWS warned of a tornado near the Truman Sports Complex, close to I-435 and I-70, at approximately 14:27 local time on June 3. By 14:34, the tornado was moving east at a speed of about 72 km/h (45 mph) into the western portions of Independence.

The tornado reportedly overturned multiple vehicles along highways near Kansas City, including a semi-truck on I-435 near Raytown. It also brought down multiple power lines and trees as it moved along the city limits, leaving nearly 4 000 customers without power.

Full damage assessment is still in progress.
