Large tornado hits earthquake-relief camp in Turkey

A sudden, very large tornado hit the earthquake-relief camp in the area of Pazarcik City, Kahramanmaras Province, Turkey on April 20, 2023, resulting in casualties and widespread damage. The tornado was strong enough to overturn cars and large vehicles.
As of April 26, authorities reported 1 fatality, about 50 injured people, and 168 temporary structures damaged.
Demirören News Agency reported 8 people were seriously injured.
The tornado devastated tents and containers, which have temporarily become the home of earthquake survivors.
Some cars and large vehicles were also turned upside down following the tornado, causing material damage.
Gendarmerie and commando squads arrived in the region to provide assistance shortly after the disaster, Anadolu Agency reported.
The province was hit by an extremely damaging M7.8 earthquake and a series of destructive aftershocks in early February 2023, leaving over 47 000 people dead.
