Asteroid 2017 SQ2 flew past Earth at 0.53 LD on September 14, 4 days before discovery

A newly discovered asteroid designated 2017 SQ2 flew past Earth at a very close distance of 0.53 LD (~203 520 km / 126 461 miles) on September 14, 2017. The object flew past us 4 days before it was discovered.

Asteroid 2017 SQ2 belongs to the Apollo group of asteroids. Its estimated diameter is between 19 and 41 m (62 and 134 feet). 2017 SQ2 flew past Earth at 16:19 UTC (± 6 min) on September 14 at a speed (relative to the Earth) of 10.06 km/s.

Asteroid 2017 SQ2 was discovered at Catalina Sky Survey on September 18, 2017. Four days after it flew past our planet.

This is the 29th known near-Earth asteroid to flyby Earth within 1 LD since the start of the year, according to data available at CNEOS on September 20, 2017. The largest so far was 2017 QP1 with an estimated diameter of 37 to 83 m (121 to 272 feet). It flew past Earth at 0.16 LD (~61 440 km / 38 177 miles) on August 14.
