Record-breaking rains hit Wanzhou, causing severe flash floods, China
Very heavy rains started affecting China’s Chongqing municipality on Thursday, July 13, 2023, forcing authorities to issue red alerts for parts of the region.
The city of Wanzhou, the second most populated urban core area in Chongqing, located on the upper reaches of the Three Gorges of the Yangtze River, recorded more than 230 mm (9 inches) of rain on July 14, resulting in severe flash floods and damage in many urban areas.
According to Xinhua, more than 2 600 residents were evacuated after intense rain flooded streets and houses.
Heavy rains were reported in 28 districts and counties of Chongqing since July 13, with a record-breaking daily rainfall of 227 mm (8.9 inches) recorded in the Wanzhou district.
Ten days ago the city was hit by extreme 261 mm (10.2 inches) in just 3 hours.
