A reported tornado struck Tauranga Bay Holiday Park in Northland, New Zealand, at approximately 08:45 LT on July 15, damaging several caravans and injuring one person. Witness accounts described an airborne caravan, overturned vehicles, and violent wind gusts, prompting emergency response and medical assistance.
One man in his mid-80s was taken to hospital after being rescued from his overturned campervan. His vehicle was blown over during the event, trapping the man inside before bystanders broke the frond window and took him out. He reportedly sustained injuries to his shoulder blade and back. Another caravan was destroyed but found to be unoccupied.
The damage within the camp varied, with some caravans suffering only superficial damage like broken windows and scattered belongings, while at least two units were severely damaged.
Campers reported that the wind forcefully rocked their vehicles and compared the sensation to an earthquake. One witness said he saw a caravan being thrown through the camp before hitting a tree.
MetService, New Zealand’s national meteorological service, stated that intense rain and thunderstorms were active in the region at the time, creating conditions favorable for tornado formation. However, the agency has not officially confirmed a tornado. Wind gusts of up to 75 km/h (47 mph) were recorded in the nearby Kaeo area.
