A strong earthquake registered by the USGS as M6.3 hit Andreanof Islands, Alaska, U.S. at 14:55 UTC on December 21, 2023. The agency is reporting a depth of 33 km (20.5 miles). EMSC is reporting M6.1 at a depth of 10 km (6.2 miles).

The epicenter was located 106.5 km (66.2 miles) SE of Adak, U.S., and 1 540 km (960 miles) SSE of Anadyr, Russia.

1 000 people are estimated to have felt light shaking.

The USGS issued a Green alert for shaking-related fatalities and economic losses. There is a low likelihood of casualties and damage.

Based on a rapid preliminary assessment of the earthquake’s magnitude and depth (M6.0; Depth: 1.6 km (1 mile)), a tsunami is not expected, NWS NTWC said at 14:59 UTC.
