Typhoon “Muifa” has continued moving NW over the East China Sea, toward the coast of eastern China over the past 24 hours. The typhoon is expected to make landfall in Zhejiang Province, China on September 14, 2022, and pass over or very close to Shanghai—the most populated city in the world.

Muifa is expected to make landfall in Zhejiang Province, China on Wednesday, September 14, with maximum sustained winds of 148 km/h (92 mph). As a result, China’s national observatory upgraded the typhoon alert to Orange.

Gale-force winds will lash coastal areas of Taiwan, Zhejiang, Fujian, Shanghai and Jiangsu from now to Wednesday afternoon, the National Meteorological Center said.1

Over the next three days, heavy rains are expected to hit parts of Taiwan, Zhejiang, Shanghai, Jiangsu, Shandong and Liaoning, according to the forecast.

Before approaching China, Muifa brought heavy downpours and gale-force winds to Japan’s Okinawa, causing disruption to transportation services in the region. Japan Airlines and All Nippon Airways, the two largest airlines in Japan, have suspended flights to and from the famous tourist destinations of Miyako and Ishigaki islands.

James Reynolds of Earth Uncut TV was on Ishigaki when Muifa moved over it, capturing unique imagery from the inside of the typhoon.

At 12:00 UTC on September 13, the center of Typhoon “Muifa” was located about 305 km (190 miles) NE of Taipei, Taiwan. The storm had maximum 1-minute sustained winds of 167 km/h (103 mph) and was moving NNW at 13 km/h (8 mph).2
