At least 11 people lost their lives as flash flooding swept through the Suleja local government area of Niger State, Nigeria, on Saturday, July 25, 2020.

The rain began at around 03:00 UTC (04:00 LT) and lasted for four hours, according to Ahmed Inga, the director-general of the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA).

Six fatalities were confirmed in Unguwan Gwari, three in Madalla, and one in the Polosa area.

The bodies of all ten victims were retrieved during a search operation conducted by SEMA staff, with the help of several local volunteers in the area.

Umar Abdullahi, the Suleja Zonal Coordinator of SEMA, said a woman was found dead near the Chaza area on Sunday, July 26, bringing the death toll to a total of 11.

Rain and flooding downed power lines and trees, causing outages. A local government spokesperson reported as well that several houses collapsed in the area, trapping people in their homes.
