Shallow M6.3 earthquake hits Southern East Pacific Rise

A strong and shallow earthquake registered by the USGS as M6.3 hit Southern East Pacific Rise at 23:09 UTC on November 15, 2018. The agency is reporting a depth of 10 km (6.2 miles). EMSC is reporting the same magnitude and depth.

There are no people living within 100 km (62 miles).

The epicenter was located about 3 200 km (2 000 miles) WNW of Puerto Natales, Chile and 3 300 km (2 060 miles) WNW of Ushuaia, Argentina.

A tsunami was not produced.

Regional seismicity

This is the third M6+ earthquake since 21:21 UTC, November 14 when M6.0 was registered near the east coast of Kamchatka, Russia. The Kamchatka quake was followed by M6.4 off the coast of off the coast Visokoi Island, South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands at 20:02 UTC on November 15, 2018.
