Under construction Nam Ao dam bursts, causing severe flash flooding, Laos

An under construction Nam Ao Hydropower Project in Phaxay district, Xieng Khuang Province of Laos burst on September 11, 2017, causing severe flash flooding.

According to KPL, Lao News Agency, many farmlands of people in Thathom district, Xaysomboun Province have been flooded following the bust of the dam. However, people have moved to higher ground and there are no reports of injuries or deaths.

The road No: D1 stretching between Paksan district in Borikhamxay Province and Phaxay district in Xieng Khuang Province has been cut off by flood water, KPL said.

Relevant officials of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment are investigating into the cause of the incident and estimating its damages.

The project was 85% complete.
