• Major X1.1 solar flare erupts from Active Region 2994

    A major solar flare measuring X1.1 at its peak erupted from newly numbered Active Region 2994 at 03:34 UTC on April 17, 2022. The event started at 03:17 UTC and ended at 03:51. A coronal mass ejection (CME) was produced during the event but the location of the source region does not favor Earth-directed CMEs. This will change in the days ahead as the region turns into geoeffective position.

  • Subtropical Depression “Issa” forms near eastern South Africa, heavy rainfall claims at least 45 lives

    Heavy rainfall continues falling over eastern South Africa, particularly over the Province of KwaZulu-Natal (KZN), since April 10, causing floods and landslides. On April 12, authorities reported at least 45 fatalities across the city of Durban. An unknown number of people are missing and the death toll is expected to rise.

  • Record-breaking cold hits Europe, causing widespread damage to agriculture

    Unseasonably cold weather hit parts of Europe over the past weekend, following warmer-than-normal temperatures in previous weeks that caused rapid greening of flora. Damage to agriculture is widespread but it seems it’s not as bad as it was last year when a similar cold episode happened. The worst affected countries were France, Germany, Spain and Austria.
