A team of oceanographers has mapped 19 000 previously unknown undersea volcanoes using radar satellite data, which could improve ocean current modeling and submarine navigation.

A notable eruptive pulse took place at Ecuador’s Sangay volcano on April 21, 2023, producing large volcanic ash emissions and ashfall west of the volcano.

Ash clouds produced by the major eruption of Russia’s Sheveluch volcano led to the cancellation of scores of flights in Alaska. The ash clouds drifted across the International Date Line into Alaska airspace, causing safety concerns for airlines over the next couple of days. As a precautionary measure, Alaska Airlines canceled 45 flights to and from Alaska and within the state. Other airlines also had to cancel or delay their flights.

A powerful explosive eruption took place at Russia’s Sheveluch volcano at 13:10 UTC on April 10, 2023. As a result, KVERT raised the Aviation Color Code from Orange to Red. Very heavy ashfall — the strongest in 60 years — was reported in Klyuchi and other nearby cities and villages.

A strong explosive eruption occurred at Russia’s Bezymianny volcano at 05:38 UTC on April 7, 2023. As a result, the Aviation Color Code was raised to Red.

Due to an increase in seismicity detected since March 30, 2023, Chilean authorities raised the Alert Level for Laguna del Maule volcanic complex from Green to Yellow on April 3, 2023.
