Seismic activity beneath the Mauna Loa volcano has been gradually increasing over the past 2 months. In addition, a small seismic swarm started on September 23, with most earthquakes in a cluster about 5 km (3.1 miles) wide and -2 to 1 km (-1.2 to 0.6 miles) below the surface. The Aviation Color Code is at Yellow and the Volcano Alert Level at Advisory.
New activity/unrest was reported for 4 volcanoes from September 14 to 20, 2022. During the same period, ongoing activity was reported for 18 volcanoes.
The Malaysian Lipad mud volcano erupted at around 10:00 LT on September 18, 2022, creating a spectacular view. Similar eruptions at the volcano took place in 2014 and 2019.
The Volcanic Alert Level (VAL) for Taupō Volcano, New Zealand was raised to 1 (minor volcanic unrest) on September 20, 2022. The unrest is causing earthquakes and ground deformation at the volcano. The last eruption of this volcano took place in 260 CE.
A new eruption started at Piton de la Fournaise volcano on September 19, 2022, following a seismic crisis that started at 02:23 local time (06:23 UTC). The alert level was raised to 2-1. Trails in the upper part of the summit were closed to the public.

A seismic swarm started under Trident stratovolcano, Alaska on August 24, 2022, likely driven by the movement of magma or magmatic fluids. The swarm is still in progress but now at a decreased rate. The last eruption of this volcano took place in 1974 (VEI 3).
Home Reef submarine volcano in Tonga started erupting on September 9, 2022 and re-emerged above sea level. The activity at the volcano is fumarolic, releasing gas into the atmosphere up to 1 km (3 200 feet) above sea level. A Hazard Alert was issued to all marines to sail at least 5 km (3.1 miles) away from the volcano.
The earthquake swarm under Ta’u Island volcano that started in July 2022 continues with declining frequency. However, the current trend of decreasing numbers of earthquakes does not mean the earthquake swarm will end.
