The eruption of Mauna Loa volcano that started on November 28, 2022, in its Northeast Rift Zone continues, with several fissures and lava flows active.

Seismic unrest continues at Taupō volcano, New Zealand, with a strong and shallow M5.6 earthquake registered on November 30, 2022. The Volcanic Alert Level for Taupō volcano was increased to Level 1 on September 20, 2022. This was based on ongoing earthquakes and deformation at levels above typical background since May.

Satellite and remote geophysical data show signs of unrest at Ahyi Seamount, Northern Mariana Islands, prompting the USGS to raise the Aviation Color Code to Yellow and the Volcano Alert Level to Advisory on November 28, 2022.

Mauna Loa started erupting at around 09:30 UTC on November 28, 2022 (23:30 LT on November 27) in Moku‘āweoweo, the summit caldera of Mauna Loa, inside Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park. Mauna Loa is the largest active volcano on our planet. Its last eruption took place in 1984 (VEI 0).

A new eruptive fissure event opened at the northeastern base of Etna’s SE crater on November 27, 2022. The vent was first seen at around 17:00 UTC when persistent cloud coverage thinned.

Satellites are registering significant underwater gas emissions at Nishinoshima volcano, Japan following increased eruptive activity at the volcano that started in September 2022. The activity at the volcano further intensified on October 2 and 3.

In January 2022, Hunga-Tonga Hunga-Ha’apai (HT-HH) emitted the biggest atmospheric explosion recorded on Earth in more than 100 years. Several months after the eruption, a New Zealand-led team has completed the fullest investigation to date into the eruption of this underwater Tongan volcano.
