Powerful tornado hits Murcia town in Negros Occidental, Philippines
A powerful tornado struck the town of Murcia in Negros Occidental, Philippines, on March 6, 2025, causing power outages throughout the area.
The tornado swept through Barangay Blumentritt in Murcia at approximately 14:00 local time (LT), tearing off the roof of a warehouse belonging to BMB Enterprise and its adjacent barracks in Barangay Blumentritt. It also damaged power lines, according to Murcia Mayor Gerry Rojas.
“It was strong. It lasted about three minutes,” Rojas said on March 7.
Personnel from the Murcia Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office and firefighters were dispatched immediately after reports of sparking power lines. The Nature’s Spring Water refilling station on the opposite side of the road also sustained damage.
“It was confirmed to be a tornado after verification with the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA),” said Irene Bel Ploteña, head of the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office.
Engineer Mervin Dalian, assistant vice president of the Network Development and Operations Group at Negros Power, stated that the tornado caused power disruptions in Murcia and Barangay Alijis in Bacolod.
The tornado affected Negros Power’s Bacolod-Alijis 69-kilovolt sub-transmission line, leading to outages at the Alijis and Murcia substations. Power was restored in Alijis at 15:08 LT on March 6, while Murcia regained electricity at 16:50 LT, Dalian reported.
No casualties or injuries have been reported as of March 7, 2025.
