A deep earthquake registered by the BMKG as M6.2 hit Banda Sea, Indonesia, at 09:28 UTC (16:28 local time) on October 1, 2024. The agency is reporting a depth of 631 km (392 miles). USGS and EMSC are reporting M6.1 at a depth of 588 km (365 miles).

A deep earthquake registered by the BMKG as M6.2 hit Banda Sea, Indonesia, at 09:28 UTC (16:28 local time) on October 1, 2024, with a reported depth of 631 km (392 miles).

The epicenter was located 263 km (163.4 miles) ESE of Baubau (population 159 248), South Sulawesi, Indonesia, and 292.1 km (181.5 miles) N of Likisá, Liquiçá, Timor Leste.

81 000 people are estimated to have felt weak shaking.

This earthquake has no tsunami potential, BMKG said.

The USGS issued a Green alert for shaking-related fatalities and economic losses. There is a low likelihood of casualties and damage.

Overall, the population in this region resides in structures that are vulnerable to earthquake shaking, though resistant structures exist. The predominant vulnerable building types are unreinforced brick with concrete floor and precast concrete frame with wall construction.

Recent earthquakes in this area have caused secondary hazards such as landslides that might have contributed to losses.
