Large sinkhole opens up inside Yorktown, N.Y. park

A large sinkhole opened up inside a popular multi-sports park complex in Westchester County, New York on December 24, 2022.

The hole is about 3 m (10 feet) wide and about 9 m (30 feet) deep. Inside of it, a 104 cm (42 inches) wide gas pipe is seen without any visible damage.

“The pipe, itself, has not been compromised in any way, shape or form. It is not leaking. It is not on fire. It’s just there,” Yorkwotn Supervisor Matt Slater said.1

“Right now, the focus is making sure that we understand what has transpired here and then making sure that we fix the short-term problem, which is filling the hole, and then address the long-term issues of understanding the cause and making sure that there are no other voids in the ground,” Slater said.

Enbridge, the company that controls the pipeline, said the pipeline system is in safe operating condition, adding it is monitoring the area around the clock and continuously evaluating the condition of its pipeline facilities.

Residents are urged to avoid the area.
