Deep M6.8 earthquake hits south of Fiji islands

A strong and deep earthquake registered by the USGS as M6.8 hit south of Fiji Islands at 20:21 UTC on February 16, 2022. The agency is reporting a depth of 528 km (328 miles). EMSC is reporting the same magnitude and depth.

The epicenter was located about 570 km (354 miles) WSW of Haveluloto, Tongatapu Tonga and 649 km (403 miles) SSE of Suva, Fiji.

There are no people living within 100 km (62 miles).

There is no tsunami threat from this earthquake.

The USGS issued a Green alert for shaking-related fatalities and economic losses.
