A large landslide hit the city of Bafoussam in western Cameroon on Monday night, October 28, 2019, killing at least 42 people and leaven dozens missing.

Authorities said the slide was caused by several days of heavy rain. The city is located some 200 km (120 miles) N of Douala.

Dozens are still missing under debris, according to local media reports.

At least 12 people sustained severe injuries.

The affected community is located some 200 km (120 miles) N of Douala and had about 120 residents.

Government officials told local media some of the victims built their homes on hilly ground, prone to landslides.

"It is clear that we will have to ask the people who are residents in this area to leave because the area is actually very dangerous," regional governor Fonka Awa Augustine said.
